I am a small animal practitioner and veterinarian sonographer with over 25 years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery. I am also a practice owner and know and appreciate the challenges general practitioners face every day. Diagnostic testing must be practical, efficient and affordable, and help us to help clients make the right choices for their pets. Ultrasound is a vital tool in veterinary practice and should be a part of everyday work-ups. The ability to provide this to our patients is invaluable and whether you are a veterinarian who already uses ultrasound for FAST scans and cystocentesis, or are yourself interested in advancing your skills, or just need to get your patients scanned by a reputable veterinary sonographer, I am here to help.
My ultrasound training began in 2004 and from there I have dedicated many years of training in ultrasound, echocardiography and internal medicine and cardiology with some of the top specialists in the industry (review my CV). I am a 2011 graduate of the DVM Imaging Program through the Sound-Eklin Academy of Veterinary Imaging in Texas where I received, with honours, a Certificate of Advanced Diagnostic Imaging in ultrasound and echocardiography. In 2014 I successfully completed the International Veterinary Ultrasound Society Certificate program and went on to serve on the IVUSS board. I served as Member at Large and went on to lead the organization as IVUSS President until 2019, the first Canadian veterinarian to hold this position. I am very proud and honoured to be part of an organization that promotes the advancement of knowledge and high standards of veterinary small animal diagnostic ultrasound imaging and interpretation. I continue to further my education by attending various seminars, wet labs and conferences every year.
I am currently enrolled in the General Practitioners Certificate Program (GPCert SAM) through the International School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies. Upon completion, I will have a recognized certification within the academic community with increased skills and knowledge in managing veterinary internal medicine cases.
I have worked as an ultrasound instructor teaching veterinary students, veterinarians and technicians both privately and with various ultrasound companies. I have also provided CE ultrasound teaching webinars on an international basis through Vet Meet. Your time is valuable and as a veterinarian and sonographer, I will investigate and report my findings in context to your patient's history, x-rays and laboratory findings - no disconnect. My findings are reported immediately after the scan so that you can move on to managing your patient. Ultrasound-guided procedures such as FNA's, biopsies and pericardiocentesis can be performed on a timely basis without waiting for ultrasound reports as I will communicate with veterinarians while I am in hospital. I welcome interested veterinarians to sit in during my scans. You are welcome to ask questions! I am happy to share my passion with you!
Telemedicine consults with specialists are available for any scan depending on the desire of the referring DVM, clinical questions you would like answered and the complexity of the case.
My scope of diagnostic practice has expanded to offer a variety of minimally invasive surgical services. My training has been throughout the US (Oquendo Center Las Vegas, Colorado State University, C.A.R.E Denver, Translational Medicine Institute Colorado, Miami Miller School of Medicine, and in Germany with ESAVS) with some of the top specialists in this field. I offer a variety of endoscopic, both flexible and rigid options, as well as laparoscopic diagnostic services such as laparoscopic spay and liver biopsy through referral at Mountain Vista Veterinary Hospital in Collingwood. I also offer in-house ultrasound services for patients that are not within my driving region. I have seen patients from as far as Ottawa and Toronto, working with referral veterinarians to ensure optimal patient care.

Serving veterinary hospitals in the Southern Georgian Bay region including Collingwood, Town of Blue Mountains, Owen Sound, Wasaga Beach, Barrie and the areas beyond, South Georgian Bay Veterinary Ultrasound and Endoscopy brings ultrasound and echocardiography to your veterinary hospital. I also accept referral ultrasound services as well as endoscopic and laparoscopic services at my hospital, Mountain Vista Veterinary Hospital, in Collingwood. Working directly with you and your team, my goal is to bring prompt and reliable service to you and your patients. As a veterinarian trained in ultrasound and echocardiography, I have performed thousands of ultrasound exams and have managed my own patients in my hospital. Results of the scan can be discussed with you same day, on site, which is a distinct advantage to using a veterinarian trained in ultrasound, so that you can efficiently go on to manage your patients.
ABDOMINAL ULTRASOUND
Complete Abdominal Scan
All abdominal scans include an examination of the entire abdomen using a systematic approach taking into account your patient's medical history and any diagnostic tests that have been performed prior to arrival. Dr. Pankatz will review the patient's medical history so that you can get the most out of the scan. Focused scans such as pregnancy checks, cryptorchid exams and urogenital tract (urinary bladder, kidneys, prostate and female reproductive tract) evaluations are also available.
ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY
Cardiac Ultrasound
All cardiac exams include complete right and left 2-D imaging and colour and spectral Doppler evaluation (PW and CW measurements). Cardiac tumour screens are recommended when there is pericardial effusion or abdominal hemangiosarcoma suspects. Depending on the complexity of the case and the clinical questions you want answered, Dr. Pankatz is able to generate a report or send the study for evaluation to a veterinary cardiologist.
THORACIC ULTRASOUND
Non-cardiac thoracic cavity scan
Thoracic ultrasound is warranted when pulmonary or mediastinal pathology is suspected or when there is pleural effusion. Three-view chest x-rays prior to the scan are extremely helpful to guide the exam. Thoracic ultrasound can be used guide fluid drainage and perform aspirates or biopsies to screen for pathology.
OCULAR AND SMALL PARTS
Eyes, Neck and Cutaneous Swellings
High quality images of the eye and surrounding ocular structures can be obtained with a specialized high frequency 22 MHz probe. The ocular chambers, the lens, the retina and optic nerve as well as the periocular tissue can be evaluated with ultrasound. Other superficial structures such as the thyroid and parathyroid glands and cutaneous lumps and draining tracts can be evaluated with ultrasound. Ultrasound of superficial structures can also be used to guide foreign body removal and take cytological samples.
MUSCULOSKELETAL ULTRASOUND
Stifle, Shoulder and Achilles Tendon
With the improvement of ultrasound technology, the availability of high frequency linear transducers, and the development of new scanning protocols, musculoskeletal ultrasound is rapidly becoming an important diagnostic tool in aiding in the diagnosis of many joint and tendon conditions. MSK ultrasound is used to evaluate the cranial cruciate ligament, the medial meniscus as well as the ligaments in the shoulder and the achilles tendon. All MSK ultrasound studies are evaluated by a radiologist with expertise in MSK ultrasound.
ULTRASOUND GUIDED PROCEDURES
Aspirates and Biopsies
Ultrasound-guided procedures including FNA and needle core biopsy as well ultrasound-guided thoracocentesis, pericardiocentesis, abdominocentesis and cystocentesis in those difficult to palpate cases are available. Cystocentesis is offered at a discounted fee when combined with abdominal scanning services. Samples collected can be sent to the pathologist of your choice. Ultrasounded-guided core biopsies require heavy sedation or general anesthesia and clotting profile with CBC and biochemical profile prior to the procedure. Our mobile PT/PTT machine allows for on-site testing if required.
MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY
Laparoscopy and Endoscopy
Minimally Invasive Surgery MIS includes both laparoscopy (surgery through small incisions) and endoscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed through the body's organs such as the intestinal, urogenital and respiratory tracts and the ear canals). In many cases MIS complements what is found on ultrasound. A variety of laparoscopic and endoscopic services are available through referral to Mountain Vista Veterinary Hospital which is fully equipped with a laparoscopic surgery suite and a top of the line Karl Storz rigid and flexible endoscopic equipment.

Important things to know when working with us
HOW IT WORKS
REQUEST A SCAN
If you are new to SGBVUS, start by setting up your clinic's free account portal by clicking the rDVM Login button on the home page. Once your account is activated, you will see a complete list of services and fees. Call 705 446-0261 to schedule a mobile appointment with our staff then login to your clinic portal to enter your case. The more information you can provide the better including history, blood results and x-rays as it will help direct the exam!
INFORM YOUR CLIENT
All patients should be fasted (unless an emergency scan). Urination should be prevented prior to the exam if possible especially if the urogenital tract is the area of concern. In almost all cases patients will be clipped, so give your clients a heads up to avoid misunderstanding. Have the patient dropped off earlier than the scheduled time and arrange pick-up by calling when the procedure is done. I make every effort to keep on time but the nature of a mobile business can sometimes cause delays due to weather, traffic and cases that take longer than expected.
GET PERMISSION
Sedation is often not needed for many ultrasound exams however fractious, nervous or obese deep-chested patients often require sedation in order to get a quality exam. Please get permission from the owner to sedate ahead of time to avoid delays. Discuss the possibility of an FNA or aspiration and get permission from the client should this be recommended. Informed consent should be obtained for all procedure especially core biopsies, laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures so the client is aware of possible risks.
PREPARE THE PATIENT
Please have the patient clipped prior to my arrival. Hold off on sedation or anesthesia until I arrive however nervous patients can be given gabapentin two hours prior to the exam providing no contraindications. Your team will be responsible for administering sedatives and monitoring the patient during the exam. At least one assistant will be required to hold on to the patient during the exam.
GET THE REPORT
A verbal report of my exam findings will be made immediately after the exam. A comprehensive written report will be available on your clinic's website account portal within 24hours and will be automatically e-mailed to you when complete. Specialist consults with a radiologist, cardiologist or internal medicine specialist are available for any scan via telemedicine if warranted. When I work with specialists, clinical history and previous testing will be included in the clinical context of the scan so that you can get the most out of your consult.

I AM A PET OWNER - HOW CAN I BOOK AN ULTRASOUND EXAM OR OTHER SERVICE FOR MY PET?
Dr. Pankatz works directly with veterinarians at veterinary hospitals within her driving radius for mobile ultrasound and echocardiogrpahy (heart ultrasound) services. If you think your pet could benefit from this service, please contact your veterinarian. If your pet needs endoscopic or laparoscopic services, please have your veterinarian contact Dr. Pankatz at 705 446-0261.
CAN I COME TO DR. PANKATZ'S VETERINARY HOSPITAL FOR ULTRASOUND OR ENDOSCOPIC SERVICES INSTEAD?
Yes. Dr. Pankatz accepts referrals or direct appointments that require ultrasound, cardiac ultrasound or endoscopic services at Mountain Vista Veterinary Hospital in Collingwood. This may be set up through referral from your regular veterinarian or a consultation may be set up with Dr. Pankatz. We will contact your regular veterinarian to obtain your pet's medical history. For consultations regarding laparoscopic spays, a complimentary telephone consultation is available with one of Dr. Pankatz's associates. Please call 705 446-0261 to set this up.
WHY USE A MOBILE ULTRASOUND SERVICE?
Many patients can greatly benefit from ultrasound in general practice. The need for an ultrasound exam should be discussed with clients early in the diagnostic process to prepare them and increase acceptance of this valuable diagnostic tool. Compliance is much greater when you can offer this service in your own hospital as clients feel more comfortable in familiar surroundings and may not have the time or resources to travel outside of their area. Ultrasound can greatly increase diagnostic efficiency in your practice translating into better care for your patients. It can be very rewarding being able to manage patients in your own hospital through offering ultrasound and ultrasound guided services.
HOW ARE RESULTS OBTAINED?
Dr. Pankatz will interpret most ultrasound and echocardiographic studies she performs as her training has included ultrasound and echocardiography interpretation and report writing. A verbal report will be provided immediately after the exam. A formal written report will be available through the SGBVUS and MIS client portal within 24 hours of the scan and will also be e-mailed to your hospital. Consults with a radiologist, cardiologist or internal medicine specialist via telemedicine are also available for any scan and may be recommended in cases that are particularly complex or unusual or if Dr. Pankatz can not help you answer your clinical questions. When using a telemedicine service, the images sent will only be helpful if the scan was performed in the context of clinical case and in a systematic and logical manner. Dr. Pankatz reviews medical history, blood work and x-rays and uses her experience as a practicing veterinarian to help solve your diagnostic dilemmas communicating with specialists when needed on your behalf in context to the clinical and sonographic presentation.

HOW DO I SET UP AN APPOINTMENT?
Please call or e-mail to set up a mobile appointment. Dr. Pankatz is also happy to discuss the case with you before booking the appointment. Before Dr. Pankatz's arrival at your hospital, please enter the patient's information on your clinical account portal including history and any pertinent diagnostic testing results. You can directly upload lab results and digital x-rays under the tabs in your case. Many clinics have given their technicians access to the system in order to enter the required information in order to save the veterinarian's time. The more information about the case the better as this will better direct the exam. A case can not be closed or a final report generated until this step is completed.
HOW QUICKLY CAN AN APPOINTMENT BE OBTAINED
Priority will be made for emergency scans however every effort will be made to get to your hospital within 1-2 days depending on bookings and availability. Same day service is often available depending on the scanning schedule. MIS services often need a bit more planning due to preparation and after care of the equipment. Please call to discuss your MIS needs. Mobile days are Monday - Friday. If Dr. Pankatz will be away for CE or on vacation, she will e-mail all clinics so they are aware.
IS FASTING REQUIRED PRIOR TO A SCAN?
A 12 hour fast is requested for all abdominal scans as digesta in the GI tract can interfere with the exam. The exception is in emergency cases where delaying an exam in an unfasted patient would be detrimental for the patient or if the patient is pediatric or could be harmed by fasting. Fasting is also desired should sedation be needed. It is also desirable to have the patient's urinary bladder full prior to ultrasound.
WILL THE PET NEED TO BE CLIPPED?
Yes. Abdominal scans require that the fur be clipped from approximately the last 2-3 rib spaces on either side and from the xiphoid region to the pelvis. Echocardiograms require clipping under the armpit region and just caudal to the ribs on the left side of the chest. Please have the pet clipped prior to Dr. Pankatz's arrival in order to save time. Please inform the pet owner that their pet will be clipped to avoid any misunderstandings.
WILL SEDATION BE REQUIRED?
Many patients can undergo an exam without sedation however all pet owners should be advised that sedation may be required for their pet. Fractious or nervous and obese or deep chested patients are best scanned under sedation as the quality of the exam may be poor. Please have permission obtained from the client and an estimate given prior to the scan should it be required in order to save time. The quality of the scan can be dramatically affected in a patient that needs sedation where permission has not been granted.
WHAT TYPE OF SEDATION WILL BE NEEDED?
This will depend on the patient and the ultrasound study or procedure being performed. Some anesthetics should be avoided for echocardiograms which can influence the results of the scan. Patients undergoing ultrasound guided core biopsy require heavy sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Pankatz will be able to guide you in these situations.
HOW LONG SHOULD AN ULTRASOUND SCAN OR ECHOCARDIOGRAM TAKE?
It is recommended to set aside at least 30-60 minutes. At least one assistant will be required in order to hold the patient. More time may need to be set aside for ultrasound guided procedures or unexpected findings seen during the exam.
PREPARATION FOR NEEDLE CORE BIOPSIES:
A PT/PTT, CBC with platelet count and biochemical profile is required prior to a needle core biopsy. We have a mobile PT/PTT machine where the test can be run on the same day. Pets under going this procedure require heavy sedation or general anesthesia. Needle core biopsies should be scheduled in the morning so that the patient can be monitored in the hospital for the day before discharge. Potential risks including bleeding (mild to life-threatening), inadvertent organ puncture and risks asscociated with anesthesia. Informed consent should be obtained from all clients. Not all patients are good candidates for ultrasound-guided core biopsies. The patient's health status, laboratory results and ultrasound findings are used to assess risks vs benefits. In some patients, laparoscopic biopsy may be recommended and can also be performed through our mobile services. Ultrasound guided fine needle aspirates do not require the same preparation as needle core biopsies in most cases.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PATIENT MONITORING?
It is the responsibility of the veterinarian and health care team at hospitals visited to properly monitor the patient during and after scanning and during any procedures performed as Dr. Pankatz will be focussed on the exam. Patients undergoing sedation or general anesthesia should be hooked up to monitoring equipment and supervised by trained member of your hospital. IV fluids may be recommended.
CAN CLIENTS BE PRESENT FOR THE EXAM?
No. A much more focused and efficient scan can be obtained if clients are not present. It is best to have the pet dropped off at the hospital and a time for approximate discharge given to the client. Delays can happen depending on exam findings and need for ultrasound guided procedures. Dr. Pankatz will be happy to talk to clients if they are readily available after the exam has taken place but it is the responsibility of the ordering veterinarian to follow-up and manage the case.
HOW WILL I BE BILLED?
Scanning services will be billed directly to the hospital. We will not accept payments directly from clients. Cheques are made payable to Mountain Vista Veterinary Hospital or we may also accept VISA, MC and American Express payments over the phone or we can keep, at your request, your credit card information securely on file for automatic payments. Payments should be made within 30 days of services rendered, beyond which interest charges will apply and scanning services may be delayed until accounts are updated.

AMERICAN COLLEGE OF VETERINARY RADIOLOGY ULTRASOUND POSITION STATEMENT

Diagnostic ultrasound is considered the imaging modality of choice for many conditions in veterinary medicine. However, the ability to accurately identify and interpret abnormalities is highly dependent on the training and skill of the individual performing the study.
Veterinarians who perform and interpret diagnostic ultrasound examinations should be licensed veterinary practitioners having a thorough understanding of the indications and guidelines for ultrasound examinations, as well as familiarity with the basic physical principles and limitations of ultrasound imaging technology. They should be familiar with alternative and complementary imaging and diagnostic procedures, and should be capable of correlating the results of these other procedures with the ultrasound examination findings. Veterinarians who perform ultrasound examinations should understand the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the organs or anatomic areas that are being examined. They should be able to acquire ultrasound images that correctly depict anatomy, have a thorough understanding of normal ultrasound anatomy, and must be able to identify abnormal ultrasound anatomy. These veterinarians should be able to accurately document ultrasound studies and generate a written report on their findings.
